MEMORIALS
FOR WOODLAND BURIAL
Memorials in wood usually have to conform to a set of criteria
stipulated by the site that they are intended for. Work at Colney
Woodland burial site allows no more than 18 inches above ground,
a maximum width of 18 inches and a depth of 6 inches. Only native
hardwoods can be used and the pictures dispalyed are just some of the examples that I have asked to carve..
In practice it is difficult to obtain a piece of seasoned timber
in anything greater than a 6 inch depth, 4 inches being more
usual. A section that does not include heartwood is preferable
as this reduces the risk of splitting. I tend to use English Oak
as this is durable outside although Sweet Chestnut is an alternative.
