MEMORIALS FOR WOODLAND BURIAL

Memorials in wood usually have to conform to a set of criteria stipulated by the site that they are intended for. Work at Colney Woodland burial site allows no more than 18 inches above ground, a maximum width of 18 inches and a depth of 6 inches. Only native hardwoods can be used and the pictures dispalyed are just some of the examples that I have asked to carve..

In practice it is difficult to obtain a piece of seasoned timber in anything greater than a 6 inch depth, 4 inches being more usual. A section  that does not include heartwood is preferable as this reduces the risk of splitting. I tend to use English Oak as this is durable outside although Sweet Chestnut is an alternative.

Carvings are treated with either Tung oil or Linseed oil which are both natural products. Prices start from about £150 but individual carving designs are priced on request because of the intricacy.

Designs must be robust and, if lettering is required, to have a suitable area on which to cut the letters. Characters are drawn out on paper before transfering the design and carving into the wood for which I charge £5.00 a letter.

Woodland burials are becoming more and more popular and natural wood is a wonderful way of preserving the memory of a loved one. I will be happy to advise and discuss particular requirements and designs.
